When it comes to sports, we all like to imagine ourselves running with our heroes in the big leagues. However here at DesignCrowd we think the little leagues and local clubs are just as special.
Designing for sports teams is always a lot of fun, giving designers the opportunity to create designs that will inspire not purchases, but 100% commitment, team spirit, and the loyalty of fans (even if they are parents standing on the sidelines).
Since designing for sports teams is such a unique creative challenge, we've always loved running contests to encourage designers to dream big, redesigning the Olympics (twice!), creating new logos for top AFL, NRL, Baseball and Soccer teams, and even creating a new identity for Lance Armstrong's Livestrong Foundation after his doping scandal.
We've previously looked at the logos of the most valuable sports teams in the world, noting their strong preference for blue and red logos, as well as round designs, and designs featuring animals or emblems linking teams to their cultural heritage. When we take a look at some of our favorite designs from DesignCrowd and Brandcrowd, it's pretty obvious all these trends translate easily into a more local context, proving sports teams like to dream big by aligning themselves with the giants.

One trend coming out of our crowdsourced favorites we haven't seen as heavily in the top 50 is the use of the color green, which lends itself perfectly to sports logos. Green is a color generally associated with the outdoors, healthy living, positivity and teamwork, all of which works well to represent many sports teams. Green can also be a color linked to jealousy, which unlike most other industries, sports can actually revel in. There's nothing like making your opponents feel a little disquieted by your image.
